Word Porn for Quitters
Happy Word Porn Day everyone!
For those new to the party, word porn is all about enjoying the wonky world of words. As writers and other creative folks, words have crazy power (and they sometimes abuse that power, holding out when we have them on the tip of our tongue, tantalizing us with a slew of nonsense syllables when we want that one…specific…word…Bad Words!) While I often get lazy and indulge in overused and overwrought words, every Friday I get the chance to expand my vocabulary, and I bring you all along for the ride.

This week’s theme was quitting or giving up. We examined it in terms of quitting those pain-in-the-arse freelancing clients, and in terms of reaching towards the stars with our publishing aspirations. Later today in my rant, I’ll take another (highly entertaining, I promise) look at quitting. So today’s word porn specimens are also loosely based around this week’s theme and the choice of quitting.
So let’s do this, everyone. Let’s jump in, roll around in the profusion of syllables, feel them caressing your lips, tear your clothes off and feel them on your hot skin… whoops! Sometimes I get confused which porn I’m writing about it. Let’s stick with the words today.
Cathexis. Not enough words use the power of the X. Along with the Q, it’s got to be one of the most neglected and lonely letters. So it’s great to give it some love when it pops up. And this word gives us lots to love. Cathexis means an investment of mental or emotional energy in a person, object or idea. Zoinks. Sentence, please!
“After years spent in a dark and dank basement plotting the combination toenail clipper/beard trimmer, Joe finally had to rethink his cathexis after shaved toes and a clipped chin. He decided that quitting might be a good, and self-preserving, plan.”
Malversation. Ooo, maybe this is Bush’s warped idea of a conversation? You know, with lots of, uh, wisdom? Actually, malversation refers to misbehavior and corruption in an office or administration. Hmm. Maybe I wasn’t that far off. Sentence!
“Tom was given plenty of opportunities to quit. But he stayed on, despite his knowledge of and giddy participation in the great malversation that was bound to get him in the clink: collecting office change and petty cash to fund weekly S&M visits by Miss Sado Sadie.”
Vituperate. Ah, a V word! Lovely genus, these are. Vituperate means to abuse or censure, or to berate. We’ve all had great run-ins with proponents of this word! So let’s do a sentence.
“The weekly vituperation, covering topics of ineptitude, failure, and stupidity, was a well-known fact of working with Jack. But when the attacks began to include terms such as “Fatty McFatersons” and “Bungdillholeweedassmuncher,” the team couldn’t take it anymore. They quit en masse and the company was never heard from again.”
Good times. Hope you enjoyed, and stay tuned for a Friday rant.

First off, high props for using a picture from one of my all-time favorite comedies to accompany your post. Gawwwd!
Second off, your comment about Bush misusing malversation made me laugh out loud. Glad I stopped by QRW today! Keep up the good work as your teacher would say!
May 16th, 2008 at 11:32 am@Sherree - wasn’t that pic an awesome find? I was pretty pleased with that one. And glad you liked the malversation entry. I will strive to continue my good work, and hope that one day you can award me a cool gold star or other nifty academic reward
May 16th, 2008 at 2:29 pmThe commentary on malversation - august.
But the cake taker is cathexis. That’s one stinkin’ cool word that I’d honestly never heard or seen in print. Great work, Amy!
FWIW, I’ve liked the series of posts this week. They’ve been a good combination of usefulness, wisdom, and QRW spunk - high five!
May 16th, 2008 at 2:34 pm@Charlie - Yay! Virtual high five back at ya! And hope you like the rant too…
